SOUNDS OF DETROIT: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF J DILLA FEAT. THE PHARCYDE / SLUM VILLAGE / BREAKBEAT LOU/RICH MEDINA

In association with Fusicology & Future x Sounds

Friday, July 12, 2024

6:00 pm -

Von King Park

670 Lafayette Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11216

In association with Fusicology and Future x Sounds, celebrate what would have been the 50th birthday of the late great hip-hop producer J Dilla in Bed-Stuy with acts representing the legacy of his massively influential production discography and his hometown of Detroit. The Pharcyde hails from South Central Los Angeles, yet the beats for two of their biggest hits— “Drop” and “Runnin’”—were crafted by the Detroit MPC wizard J Dilla, and Slum Village, Dilla’s first group, for whom he produced most of their first three albums before leaving to pursue a solo career in 2001; and Breakbeat Lou, the pioneering DJ partly responsible for the essential Ultimate Breaks & Beats compilations that became a mainstay in every hip-hop DJ and producer’s crates for decades.

About this Performance

The late James Dewitt Yancey—better known as J Dilla—was one of the most celebrated and influential record producers of all time. Before his passing in 2006, he created beats for A Tribe Called Quest, De La Soul, Janet Jackson, the Roots, D’Angelo, Erykah Badu, Ghostface Killah, Common, and pretty much any other rapper looking for a rich, soulful sound. From his earliest days as a member of Slum Village through his essential solo collection Donuts, Dilla treated hip-hop production like jazz: developing swinging rhythms, embracing imperfection, and letting his samples speak to one another. Kevin “DJ Battlecat” Gilliam, also a legendary producer (Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, The Game, Faith Evans, Tha Eastsidaz) and architect of West Coast hip-hop, brings together special guests to celebrate what would have been Dilla’s 50th birthday with live jazz and hip-hop recreations of some of his most iconic beats.

@ The Broad

 Friday July 19, 2024

 07:00 PM - 11:00 PM

It’s the summer of J Dilla in Los Angeles, and The Broad joins the festivities by honoring the revered artist who would have been 50 this year. Dilla’s House at The Broad features artists who knew and worked with Dilla. An ensemble performance helmed by Detroit’s Moodymann will feature fellow Motor City icons Dames Brown on vocals, Dez Andrés on the ones and twos and percussion, and Mark de Clive-Lowe on keys and beat machines. The evening will warm up fast with LA’s own DJ Ashley Younniä; local music maven DJ Rashida will keep the energy levels up to close out the night. Situated amongst the artworks in The Broad’s special exhibition, Mickalene Thomas: All About Love, visitors can chill out with an introspective aural intervention staged by Los Angeles curatorial and arts production team Central Server Works.

Hosted by The Yancey Boys AKA Illa J + Frank Nitt. Guest co-curated by Mohogani Music and Fusicology.
